New Delhi, Feb 3: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is expected to visit India on February 5, according to sources.
During his trip, Altman, the founder of ChatGPT, is set to meet with senior government officials and participate in a fireside chat focused on the AI industry, sources said.
This marks his second visit to the country in two years, coming at a time when OpenAI's dominance in the artificial intelligence space is being challenged by new competition.
Chinese AI firm Deepseek has shaken the industry with its low-cost AI model, R1, which was developed for less than USD 6 million and uses far less computing power than widely used models like ChatGPT. Deepseek’s rise has been significant, even surpassing ChatGPT to become the top-ranked free app on Apple’s App Store, surprising many in the U.S. tech sector who had invested billions into AI development.
Altman’s upcoming trip to India will see him engage with government representatives and participate in discussions in New Delhi, though specifics about his meetings remain unclear.
Altman’s visit also occurs as OpenAI faces legal challenges in India over claims of copyright violations. However, OpenAI has maintained that it only uses publicly available data and has argued that Indian courts do not have jurisdiction over the matter.
