Farmers in Nagaur secure exclusive intellectual property rights for Nagauri Paan Methi

Farmers in the Nagaur district of Rajasthan have achieved a monumental legal victory regarding their traditional agricultural heritage. The Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Authority (PPVFRA) has officially registered Nagauri Paan Methi as a Community Farmers’ Variety. This landmark decision marks the first time this specific type of fenugreek has received sui generis intellectual property protection, effectively acting as a collective patent for the local growers.

By securing this registration, the farming community gains a powerful shield against biopiracy. This means third parties can no longer exploit or sell substandard seeds under the famous Nagaur name without authorisation. Represented by Geeta Devi of the Mundwa Panchayat Samiti, the community is now the statutory custodian of the crop. This move is particularly significant as 2026 is the International Year of Women Farmers, highlighting the leadership of women in preserving Rajasthan’s botanical diversity.

Economic Impact and Export Potential

Cultivating Nagauri Paan Methi is a highly profitable venture for the region. Spanning over 7,000 hectares across Merta City, Jayal, and Khinvsar, the crop generates an estimated ₹450 crore annually. Farmers can earn approximately ₹2.5 lakh per acre through multiple harvests, making it one of India’s most lucrative leafy crops.

Previously mislabeled as "Kasuri Methi" in many markets, the spice has now reclaimed its authentic identity. This correction, supported by the South Asia Biotechnology Centre (SABC) and NABARD, allows for better price discovery. Future plans include:

  • Acquiring a formal Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
  • Establishing HSN codes to streamline international exports.
  • Setting FSSAI food safety standards for global markets.

Scientific Recognition of Unique Traits

Research conducted over several years confirmed that this variety possesses a distinct, potent aroma that survives the drying process. Unlike common fenugreek, its sickle-shaped pods and intense flavor profile are results of the specific arid ecology of Nagaur. The SABC systematically documented these traits to meet the rigorous standards of the PPVFRA. This success story transforms local producers from simple laborers into recognized innovators and biodiversity guardians, ensuring they receive a fair share of any commercial profits derived from their ancestral seeds.
