Bhubaneswar, Feb 17: Dr. Raseswari Panigrahi, the former MLA and renowned doctor from Sambalpur, passed away last night at the age of 79 after battling a neurological illness. She had been receiving medical treatment at her residence in Shanti Nagar, Sambalpur. Her health had been deteriorating over the past few days.

The news of her passing has led to an outburst of condolences from various political leaders, including Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, and other prominent personalities. After her death, Dr. Panigrahi's eyes were donated to help others in need.

Dr. Raseswari Panigrahi was a significant figure in Western Odisha. She was elected as the MLA from Sambalpur in 2014, representing the BJD (Biju Janata Dal). However, after a few years in politics, she resigned from the BJD in 2024, citing dissatisfaction, and chose to step away from active politics. Following her resignation, Dr. Panigrahi devoted her time to social work, contributing significantly to the welfare of her community.

Her dedication to healthcare earned her the respect of many in the region, especially in Burla and Sambalpur, where she had been serving the public for several years.

Dr. Panigrahi’s contributions, both in the medical field and in politics, have left a lasting legacy. Her passing marks the end of a distinguished chapter in Sambalpur's history.
