Jagdalpur, February 7: President Droupadi Murmu inaugurated the Bastar Pandum 2026 in Jagdalpur, Chhattisgarh, on Saturday, celebrating the region's rich cultural heritage. In her speech, the President highlighted that for the people of Bastar, every moment is a celebration of life. She explained that when farmers sow seeds in the fertile land, it marks the beginning of Pandum. The arrival of the mango season, too, signals a time of festivity. “The people of Bastar celebrate every aspect of life, and this way of living is a lesson for all,” she said.

President Murmu also reflected on the historical challenges faced by Bastar, stating that despite the region’s cultural vibrancy, it had been marred by Maoist insurgency for four decades. "This period of violence deeply affected the people, particularly the youth, tribals, and Dalits," she noted. However, she emphasized that decisive measures by the Government of India against Maoist extremism have led to the gradual end of the insecurity and fear that once gripped the region. "Today, those involved in Maoist activities are abandoning violence, restoring peace to the lives of citizens," the President affirmed.

The President also acknowledged the large number of individuals who had once been part of Maoist groups but have since surrendered. "The government is committed to ensuring that these individuals, who have laid down their arms, can reintegrate into society and lead normal lives," she said. She also praised the state's "Niyad Nellanar Yojana" for its significant role in empowering villagers and improving their quality of life.

Expressing optimism about Bastar’s future, President Murmu highlighted the ongoing development initiatives in the region. “Electricity, roads, and water supply are being extended to every village. Schools that had been shut down for years are reopening, and children are returning to classrooms," she said. "This is a hopeful and inspiring transformation that is bringing joy to the citizens."

The President concluded by appreciating the efforts of those who have chosen to abandon violence and return to the fold of society. She urged them to place their faith in the Constitution and democratic values, emphasizing the importance of hard work, dedication, and trust in the democratic system. "The welfare of the poor, deprived, and backward classes is at the core of the government's priorities," she assured.
