Iconic 1990s SUV Reborn with Modern Tech and Electric Power

One of India's most celebrated automotive nameplates is making a return. Tata Motors is set to relaunch the legendary Sierra SUV this November. The original Sierra, a symbol of Tata's SUV legacy in the 1990s, is being reimagined for the modern era. The new model will blend its classic, rugged charm with advanced technology. It will be offered with both traditional internal combustion engines (ICE) and a fully electric (EV) powertrain, positioning it as a new flagship in the company's lineup.

Design Blends Nostalgia with Modernity

The new Sierra's design pays direct homage to the original. It retains the signature boxy silhouette, tall bonnet, and squared-off wheel arches that made the first generation instantly recognizable. Most importantly, the iconic large, curved rear glasshouse, a defining feature of the 1990s model, is making a modern comeback.

Recent sightings of test models confirm the production-ready design. The new Sierra has a commanding, upright profile and clean body lines. The front end is updated with a split LED headlamp design, a full-width LED light bar, and a gloss-black grille. The rear features modern connected LED tail lamps and a flat tailgate. Other contemporary touches include flush door handles and heavy body cladding, which enhance its rugged yet premium look.

A Futuristic Leap for Tata's Interiors

Inside the cabin, the new Sierra will introduce a major technological leap for Tata Motors. It is set to be the brand's first vehicle to feature a "triple-screen setup." This futuristic layout integrates a digital driver’s display, a large central infotainment touchscreen, and a dedicated screen for the front passenger, all housed under a single glass panel.

This design creates a sleek, minimalist dashboard. The center console is expected to feature touch-based climate controls and a minimalist gear selector. The cabin will also be equipped with a new flat-bottom steering wheel featuring Tata's illuminated logo. Premium soft-touch materials and metallic accents will be used throughout. The Sierra will also be packed with the latest technology, including connected car features and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

Powertrain Options for Every Buyer

Tata will offer the Sierra with a complete range of power options. The ICE variants are expected to launch first. These will include a new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine and the familiar 2.0-litre Kryotec diesel engine. This diesel unit is the same one found in the Harrier and Safari, producing 168bhp. Both engines will likely be offered with 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmissions.

The electric version, the Sierra.ev, will follow a few weeks later. It is built on Tata’s advanced Acti.EV architecture, which also underpins the new Harrier EV. The electric Sierra is expected to offer multiple battery pack options, with an estimated range of over 500 km on a single charge. It will also feature a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive (AWD) layout, making it a capable and versatile electric SUV.

By reviving its iconic tagline, "It takes the rough with the smooth," Tata is signaling the Sierra's blend of past toughness and modern comfort. The new Sierra will be positioned above the Harrier and Safari, appealing to both nostalgic fans and new EV buyers.
