Bhubaneswar, Mar 11: Renowned ollywood actress Rachana Banerjee, known for her roles in Odia, Bengali, and Hindi cinema, has announced her candidacy for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal, her neighboring state.
The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal has chosen Rachana to contest from the Hooghly Lok Sabha constituency. This decision was part of the broader announcement made yesterday by the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC, revealing their candidates for all 42 Lok Sabha seats in the state.
Among the notable selections, cricketer Yusuf Pathan has been nominated by the TMC to run for the Baharampur seat, currently held by Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.
In a surprising move, the TMC has omitted actress Nusrat Jahan, the incumbent MP from Basirhat, from their candidate list. However, Mohua Moitra, previously expelled from the Lok Sabha due to involvement in a bribery scandal, has been granted the party's ticket to contest from the Krishnanagar seat.
Further, the TMC has named actor Saayoni Ghosh as their candidate for the Jadavpur constituency, which was previously represented by actress Mimi Chakraborty.
Rachana Banerjee (49), gained fame through her roles in numerous Odia films such as "Santan," "Lakshman Rekha," "Sakala Tirtha To Charane," "Bhai Hela Bhagari," "Lakhe Siba Puji Paichi Pua," "Subhadra," "Ganga Jamuna," and "Pua Mora Bhola Sankar." She enjoyed widespread popularity in Odisha during the 1990s.
