Bhubaneswar, July 13: The Kesinga Railway Station in Odisha's Kalahandi district has been transformed into a modern, accessible and passenger friendly railway station under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Redeveloped at an approximate cost of Rs 22 crore, the station now offers significantly improved passenger amenities and infrastructure, reinforcing its role as an important rail gateway to western Odisha, said an official release.
According to East Coast Railway (ECoR), the comprehensive redevelopment has created a more convenient, comfortable and seamless travel experience for passengers while enhancing the station's operational efficiency.
The project includes modernization of the existing station building, development of a new second entry to ensure smoother passenger movement, construction of a 12-metre-wide Foot Over Bridge equipped with three lifts for barrier free accessibility, improvement of platform surfaces and platform shelters, widening of approach roads, development of pedestrian pathways and a modern drainage system. Passenger amenities have also been substantially upgraded with improved toilets, a retiring room and dormitory, making the station more convenient and welcoming for travellers.
Designed with inclusivity at its core, the redeveloped station caters to the needs of all passengers, including senior citizens, Divyangjan and families. Improved circulation areas, enhanced accessibility and thoughtfully planned public spaces have made Kesinga Railway Station more user friendly while ensuring safer and more efficient movement of passengers.
Established in 1931, Kesinga Railway Station has long served as an important railway station on the Raipur–Vizianagaram line of East Coast Railway. Over the decades, it has connected Kalahandi with major cities across Odisha and neighbouring states, facilitating passenger travel, trade and commerce. Its strategic location has made it a vital transport hub and an important driver of the region's socio-economic development.
The station's transformation is expected to further strengthen connectivity and support the growing aspirations of the region. Improved railway infrastructure will benefit residents, students, farmers, traders and visitors alike by enabling smoother travel, facilitating commercial activities and supporting Kalahandi's expanding agricultural, business and tourism sectors.
Kalahandi is renowned for its rich tribal heritage, vibrant cultural traditions and skilled craftsmanship. The district is internationally known for the spirited Ghumura dance and is equally celebrated for its handloom, handicrafts and colourful festivals that reflect the unique identity of western Odisha. The redeveloped Kesinga Railway Station now serves as a fitting gateway to this culturally vibrant region, welcoming visitors with modern facilities and an enhanced travel experience.
Kesinga Railway Station is among the 57 stations in Odisha being redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme and is one of the stations being dedicated to the nation by the Hon'ble Prime Minister. Its transformation reflects the continued commitment of Indian Railways and East Coast Railway to developing modern, inclusive and future ready railway stations that combine improved passenger amenities, universal accessibility, operational excellence and sustainable infrastructure, while contributing to the overall growth and development of the region.
