Odisha’s Bhawanipatna observes centuries-old Chhatar Jatra

Bhawanipatna, Oct 1: The annual Chhatar Jatra of Maa Manikeswari, the revered deity of Kalahandi, was celebrated with immense enthusiasm, drawing thousands of devotees from within the district and neighboring states. The grand procession and associated rituals marked one of the most significant events in the tribal-dominated district of Odisha, although it was once again accompanied by controversy over the traditional animal sacrifices that form part of the celebrations.

The centuries-old tradition of the Chhatar Jatra saw its customary rituals carried out in full public view, with many animals and birds sacrificed during the Puja ceremonies. On the Mahastami day, the eighth day of the Durga Puja festival, the streets of Bhawanipatna, Kalahandi's district headquarters, turned blood-stained as both tribal and non-tribal people participated in the age-old practice, which continues to attract both devotion and criticism.

The Procession and Rituals

The day’s festivities began at the crack of dawn with the emergence of Goddess Manikeswari’s ‘Vijay Chhatar’ from Jenakhol, situated on the outskirts of Bhawanipatna. After a secret midnight puja, the ceremonial Vijay Chhatar was paraded through the streets and returned to the Chhattar temple by noon, concluding its journey at the Maa Manikeswari Temple at the Royal Palace.

In a symbolic gesture of peace and brotherhood, devotees released two pigeons one black and one white  over the temple’s roof, signifying harmony among all communities.

Security Measures and Administration’s Role

To ensure law and order during the massive event, the local administration deployed 15 platoons of police forces to manage the large crowds and maintain safety. While efforts were made by the authorities to sensitize the public against animal sacrifices, the traditional practice continued in line with long-established customs.

Despite initiatives to promote peace and harmony, the animal sacrifices took place as usual, with the administration working to ensure a smooth celebration and urging the public to adhere to safety norms and maintain order.

Cultural Significance

The Chhatar Jatra holds immense cultural importance in Kalahandi, representing the region's rich traditions and deep-rooted devotion to Goddess Manikeswari. While the event showcases the region's unique cultural heritage, the practice of animal sacrifice remains a point of contention, as animal rights groups and social activists continue to call for a change in these customs.

The Chhatar Jatra stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Kalahandi's rituals, while also sparking ongoing discussions about the balance between tradition and modernity in festival celebrations.
