Bhubaneswar, Jan 13: Dr Michael Debabrata Patra, an ace economist from Odisha’s Cuttack, has been reappointed as RBI Deputy Governor.
He will resume his office on January 15, according to a letter issued by the Department of Personnel & Training.
“The appointment committee of the Cabinet has approved the re-appointment of Dr MD Patra, deputy governor, Reserve Bank of India, for a further period of one year,” read the order.
Patra was first appointed as RBI Deputy Governor in January 2020 for three years. The government had extended his term by one year last year. He is in charge of the all-important monetary policy decisions and a member of the rate-setting panel. Patra had played a vital role in dealing with COVID-related impact on the economy.
Patra passed his graduation from the erstwhile Ravenshaw College and post-graduation from Utkal University. He has a PhD in Economics from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. Later he joined the RBI in 1984 and served efficiently in various capacities. Before becoming deputy governor, Patra was executive director of the RBI. He is also working as a fellow of Harvard University.
