Balasore, June 20: In a shocking incident, a young woman allegedly died by suicide in Jaleswar area of Odisha’s Balasore district after facing harassment from her in-laws for giving birth to a baby girl.
The deceased has been identified as Namita Pradhan and the incident has been reported from Patharpura village under Jaleswar police limits in the district.
As per reports, Namita was found hanging at her in-laws’ house at around 10 am today. She was rushed to JK Bhatt Hospital in Jaleswar, where the attending doctors declared her dead on arrival.
While Namita’s in-laws said she died by suicide, her parents alleged that she was subjected to physical and mental torture because she gave birth to a baby girl which they believe prompted her to take the extreme step.
According to sources, Ritesh, son of Pushpapriya Kamila, Vice Chairman of Jaleswar Municipality, married Namita, daughter of Jalandhar Pradhan, about three years ago. Their married life was happy at first. However, things changed after Namita gave birth to a baby girl. Instead of welcoming the child, her in-laws allegedly started torturing her badly. Namita had told her parents about the abuse she was facing.
Upon getting the information, Jaleswar police arrived at the scene and seized the body. Subsequently, it was sent for post-mortem.
The cops also detained Namita’s husband Ritesh and her uncle-in-law Basanta Kamila for questioning in connection with the death.
Further investigation into the matter was underway to ascertain the real reason behind her death, said the police.
