Nuapada, Sept 14: Two persons have been arrested in Nuapada district of Odisha on charge of killing a leopard and eating its meat, a senior forest official said on Saturday.
The arrested poachers have been identified as Padu Majhi and Buturam Majhi. They were sent to judicial custody after a local court denied bail to both yesterday.
The incident occurred in October last year in Donger village under Sinapalli forest range in the district. Padu had set a trap in the forest for wild boar poaching. A leopard was trapped and Padu informed Buturam of his village who reached the spot with a country-made gun.
Buturam killed the wild animal by firing from a very close range. Later, they deskinned it and ate the meat cooking in the forest.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of Sinapali forest personnel raided in Tandulkona village in the area on July 9 this year and seized a leopard hide with arrest of three persons on charges of wildlife smuggling.
Based on information gathered from the trio, forest officials conducted a raid in Donger village and arrested the duo on Thursday.
Notably, three poachers were arrested in Sambalpur district on August 26 for killing and eating leopard meat.
