Bhubaneswar, Jul 30: Odisha will soon introduce a new initiative called the State Panchayat Puraskar, aimed at recognizing and rewarding outstanding performance among Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs). The program is inspired by the National Panchayat Awards and is designed to promote grassroots governance, improve livelihoods, and support inclusive development across the state.
State Panchayati Raj Minister Rabi Naik announced that the government has earmarked Rs 4 crore for the scheme, with the first awards to be distributed in the 2024-25 fiscal year. The awards will honor top-performing Gram Panchayats, Panchayat Samitis, and Zilla Parishads based on their achievements in Localized Sustainable Development Goals (LSDGs).
Performance will be evaluated across nine thematic areas, including key initiatives like the MGNREGA employment scheme, Swachh Bharat Mission, and Skill Development programs.
Award amounts will vary between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 25 lakh, depending on performance. The prize money must be reinvested into local development projects, infrastructure upgrades, and welfare initiatives.
Minister Naik highlighted the award’s broader goal of encouraging innovation, accountability, and empowerment within local governance systems, ensuring that rural communities benefit directly from effective administration and development efforts.
