Bhubaneswar, January 26: Odisha's Chief Minister, Mohan Charan Majhi, inaugurated the much-anticipated Adivasi Mela (Tribal Fair) 2026 on January 26, 2025, at the Adivasi Ground in Unit-1, Bhubaneswar. This annual event, which celebrates the rich tribal heritage, arts, and crafts of the state, will continue for 11 days, offering a vibrant platform for the tribal communities to showcase their culture and skills.

The fair features a variety of tribal huts and over 150 stalls, each presenting a glimpse into Odisha’s diverse tribal traditions. One of the highlights of this year's event is the introduction of a new section dedicated to "tribal culture and heritage," further emphasizing the significance of preserving and promoting tribal identity.

In his inaugural address, CM Majhi stressed the importance of education and awareness among tribal communities. He urged the tribals to be conscious of their rights, saying,"Educated and aware tribals, be conscious of your rights. Be aware of your own rights."The Chief Minister also appealed to tribals across the state—from remote villages to urban areas—to unite in the pursuit of their collective rights and progress.

CM Majhi highlighted key initiatives aimed at the comprehensive development of tribal regions. He spoke about the formation of the South Odisha and North Odisha Development Councils, with task force reports already submitted to the government. According to Majhi, these councils aim to bridge regional disparities and focus on resolving critical issues related to the lives, livelihoods, and basic challenges faced by the tribal communities.“Effective measures will be implemented very soon," he assured.

The Chief Minister also underlined the importance of a holistic approach to tribal development, stating that it is not just about protecting forests but empowering the tribals to lead the path of progress. He further emphasized that the tribal community must actively participate in this developmental journey.“Opportunities do not come frequently. Therefore, all tribals should come forward and join hands. It’s not enough to just plan; the plan must be implemented effectively and efficiently for Odisha to progress,”he added.

Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, Majhi shared his own tribal roots and assured the people that the government is committed to addressing the challenges faced by the tribals. He also pointed out that the previous government had introduced a plan to allocate land to tribals and grant them land rights. However, this initiative was discontinued by the BJP government, which, according to the Chief Minister, continues to stand with the tribals.

The Tribal Mela also serves as an important economic opportunity for the tribal communities, with products crafted by tribals being showcased. Last year, the fair saw business transactions worth ₹9 crore, and this year, the government expects even greater success. CM Majhi particularly praised the unique offerings, such as Koraput coffee, and encouraged visitors to support and purchase the authentic products made by tribal artisans.
