Odisha: Surprise raids conducted in three jails in Bargarh district

Bargath, October 5: Bargarh police, under the guidance of district Superintendent of Police (SP) Prahlad Sahai Meena, conducted surprise raids on three prisons in the district and seized illegal items.

The raids were conducted at Bargarh District Jail, Sohela Sub-Jail and Padmapur Sub-Jail eary this morning. Multiple teams were formed to cover the three jails simultaneously.

During the search, items including multiple packets of bidis, matchboxes, bhanga and other drugs were seized. This search is an attempt to maintain security and prevent illegal activities within the jail. The investigation is ongoing to determine how these items were brought into the jail.

It may me noted here that two dreaded undertrial prisoners (UTPs) audaciously escaped from the Choudwar Circle Jail by scaling the walls late on Thursday night exposing serious lapses in the security arrangements at the Choudwar Circle Jail in Cuttack district.

The escaped prisoners Raja Sahani from Lohia Nagar and Madhukant Kumar from Rampur in Bihar were arrested on January 4 for allegedly committing a robbery at a jewellery shop in Panikoili in Jajpur district and killing two people during the heist.

They were shifted from Ragadi sub-jail of Jajpur district to high-security Choudwar Circle Jail in Cuttack a few months back for security reasons.

The duo took advantage of the Dussehra celebrations in the jail on the day. Seeing absence of the warder or guards, they broke out of their cells by reportedly cutting the iron bars of their cells and scaled two jail walls to make their way out.
