Odisha SI suspended for assigning youth to investigate case while impersonating police

Bhadrak, Oct 10: A bizarre incident unfolded in Odisha’s Bhadrak district after a youth posing as a government officer was caught investigating a domestic dispute case on behalf of a police sub-inspector. The Bhadrak Police have suspended Sub-Inspector Kartik Jena of the Gramanchal Police Station following the discovery.

According to reports, after two women filed a domestic dispute complaint, Investigating Officer Kartik Jena assigned a young man to handle the case and even provided him with a government vehicle and contact number. Instead of pursuing the matter personally, Jena allegedly sent the youth identified as “Panda Babu” to the complainant’s village in the Balabhadrapur and Rasikabad areas.

The youth posed as a mediator and allegedly demanded money from the complainant’s family. His suspicious behavior prompted local residents to question his identity. When confronted, he falsely claimed to be a government employee.

Villagers detained the impersonator and handed him over to the police, who later confirmed that he was neither a police officer nor a government employee. Following an internal inquiry, Bhadrak Police determined that the sub-inspector had acted irresponsibly by assigning an unauthorized person to conduct the investigation.

District Superintendent of Police, Manoj Rout, ordered the immediate suspension of Sub-Inspector Jena for negligence and breach of duty. The police have also initiated a fraud case against the youth.

Authorities emphasized that this incident underscores the need for strict oversight and verification of officials involved in field investigations, especially in rural areas where such impersonations can easily mislead residents.
