Baripada, July 11: Police in Baripada town of Odisha's Mayurbhanj district on Friday busted a sex racket allegedly run by a couple and rescued two women.
The accused woman, identified as Mani Dalei (35), has been arrested, while her husband, Manabindha Behera, is on the run. The couple belonged to Titiri village in Kuliana.
Police also seized Rs 21,490 in cash, two two-wheelers, and other evidence from her.
As per reports, the incident came to light following a police complaint by one Binod Kumar Das (40), a resident of Bugudakota in Ward no 18 of Bhanjpur area, who alleged that the couple was operating a sex racket in their village.
In his complaint, Binod stated that the couple had been living in a rented house owned by Nagen Ghosh for the past few months. Locals noticed visitors arriving late at night and, suspecting suspicious activity, kept a close watch. They later discovered that the women visiting the couple were involved in a flesh trade operation being run from their residence.
Upon learning this, Binod reported the matter to Bhanjpur police and filed a complaint.
Subsequently, a case was registered based on the complaint, and following the investigation, Mani was arrested while two women allegedly involved in prostitution were rescued.
A probe is underway to unearth other details and efforts are on to apprehend the absconding husband, said the police.
