Bhubaneswar, March 27: Amid political speculations, the BJD on Wednesday announced Pranab Prakash Das, party organisational secretary, as its candidate for Sambalpur Lok Sabha seat against BJP strongman and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Speculations were rife that Das will contest against Pradhan from whichever seat the latter stands and the former one was deliberately criticising the Union Minister’s statements on Odisha politics on his social media handles.

Today, the BJD officially announced Das’ s candidature against Pradhan which has sparked political discussions.

Though BJD has a strong hold in Sambalpur Assembly constituency, it’s not easy for Das to woo voters being a leader from coastal Odisha. Local feeling plays an important role in Western Odisha politics, which is an open truth. Pradhan will get its benefits while Das will go to voters with party’s development works, especially the renovation of Maa Samaleswari Temple. But it’s not enough for Das to win hearts of Sambalpur voters as an outsider, said senior journalist Bikram Jena.

Pradhan, popularly known as ‘Ujjwala Man’, is credited with being the longest serving Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas. He has a strong hold in Western Odisha and popular in the region for sanctioning and setting up several projects of thousands of crores in the region. On the other hand, Das has been in constant touch with party leaders and workers at the grassroots level  while 5T chairman VK Pandian has conducted several tours to the district to prepare the field for the party’s success in the ensuing election.

Besides, Das and party observer for Sambalpur Lok Sabha seat Manas Mangaraj has been frequently visiting Sambalpur since Pradhan showed his interest in the seat.
