Bhubaneswar, Dec 5: The Health & Family Welfare Department of the Odisha Government through a notification issued on Monday renamed the Nehru Shatabdi Hospital of Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL) at Talcher in Angul district as ‘Pabitra Mohan Pradhan Government Hospital’.
This hospital will function as the future teaching hospital of the proposed ‘Pabitra Mohan Pradhan Medical College & Hospital’.
The decision to rename the hospital aligns with the State Government's approval for the establishment of the new medical college, as stated in the order No. 20135 dated August 10, 2023, by the Health & Family Welfare Department. The existing Nehru Shatabdi Hospital of MCL is being transferred to the government in anticipation of the operationalization of the new medical college. The notification emphasized that after careful consideration, the government has chosen to designate the hospital as the “Pabitra Mohan Pradhan Government Hospital.”
Pabitra Mohan Pradhan, in addition to being a freedom fighter, also served as the deputy chief minister of Odisha. The renaming decision reflects Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik's announcement made in July, where he declared that the forthcoming medical college in Talcher would be named after the esteemed freedom fighter and former deputy CM Pradhan. The Health & Family Welfare Department shared this information on its official communication platform.
