Voter turnout slow as crucial Seemanchal region votes today.
Voting for the Bihar elections Phase 2 is underway, with a voter turnout of approximately 31.38% recorded by 11 am on Tuesday. This phase is critical as it covers key constituencies in the Magadh, Champaran, and Seemanchal regions.
The main contest remains a fierce battle between the ruling NDA and the Mahagathbandhan (INDIA bloc). However, several smaller parties are expected to play a decisive role.
Focus on 'Decider' Seemanchal
All eyes are on the Seemanchal region voting, an area often called the "decider" in Bihar politics due to its unique demographics. This region, which borders Nepal, includes districts like Kishanganj, Araria, and Purnia and has a high concentration of Muslim voters.
This makes the area a battleground not just for the NDA vs INDIA bloc Bihar, but also for parties like Asaduddin Owaisi's AIMIM. The AIMIM is aiming to repeat its strong 2020 performance by consolidating Muslim votes, potentially cutting into the Mahagathbandhan's support base.
Regional 'X-Factors'
This phase is also a major test for other regional players. Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj Party is being watched closely as an 'X' factor. Meanwhile, parties like Jitan Ram Manjhi's HAM, Mukesh Sahni's VIP, and Upendra Kushwaha's RLM are fighting to prove their influence.
Mukesh Sahni, who has been promised the Deputy Chief Minister post if the Mahagathbandhan wins, is relying on support from the Nishad and Extremely Backward Classes (EBC) communities.
Key Candidates and Security
The campaigning for this phase was intense, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi trading barbs. Polling is being held under tight security following a recent blast near Delhi's Red Fort.
Several high-profile candidates are in the fray, including JD(U)'s Bijendra Prasad Yadav from Supaul, BJP's Prem Kumar from Gaya Town, and former deputy CM Tarkishore Prasad from Katihar. The final Bihar voter turnout figures for this phase will be closely watched, especially after the first phase saw a record 65.08% polling. Results for the election will be declared on November 14.
