Bhubaneswar, July 17: In a significant move to empower young women and expand the presence of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) in Odisha, the state government has proposed the establishment of five new NCC Girls Battalions.
This initiative is part of the broader State NCC Expansion Plan aimed at boosting cadet enrollment and strengthening youth involvement in nation-building.
In a formal letter to Colonel Satyabrata Swain, Director of NCC Odisha, Suryabanshi Suraj, Higher Education and Sports and Youth Affairs Minister confirmed the government's commitment to the proposal.
The initiative supports the Government of India’s vision to foster discipline, leadership, and empowerment among youth, particularly young women.
“As per our earlier discussion with DG NCC, the total strength of NCC cadets in the State is to be expanded from existing 63,000 to 90,000 cadets. Accordingly, it is proposed to raise five (05) new NCC Girls Battalions in Odisha as part of a comprehensive expansion plan of NCC in the State,” said the Minister in the letter.
The proposal to form five all-girls battalions responds to growing demand from educational institutions and community stakeholders for more inclusive NCC representation.
To facilitate the rollout, the state has requested the NCC Directorate to develop a detailed implementation plan, covering:
District-wise or region-wise deployment strategies
Infrastructure and administrative needs
Manpower and training logistics
A proposed timeline for execution
The minister also assured that the state government would provide full support for the establishment and sustained operation of the new battalions.
Once launched, the plan is expected to expand access to NCC training for female students, create equal opportunities for leadership and service, and instill a stronger sense of discipline and patriotism among Odisha’s youth.
