Bhubaneswar, June 3: In a recent alert, the Odisha Police has cautioned citizens against a rising trend in cyber fraud where scammers impersonate government officials to extort money under the pretense of a so-called "digital arrest." The police clarified that the term "digital arrest" has no legal standing under Indian law and urged people to remain vigilant.
According to the statement released on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), cybercriminals are contacting individuals by phone, claiming to be judicial officers, police personnel, or officials from the CBI and customs departments. The fraudsters threaten their targets with digital arrest in an attempt to extort large sums of money—sometimes amounting to crores of rupees.
The Odisha Police stressed that if anyone receives such suspicious calls, they should not engage with the caller. Instead, individuals are advised to immediately contact the nearest police station or report the incident by calling the national cybercrime helpline at 1930.
"There is no such provision as 'digital arrest' in Indian law. These are scams aimed at deceiving innocent people. Stay alert, stay safe," the police reiterated in their advisory.
Authorities are urging the public not to ignore such threats and to spread awareness among friends and family to prevent further victimization.
