Sambalpur, Sep 13: A notorious criminal facing over two dozen charges was injured in an exchange of fire with police early Sunday morning in Sambalpur.
At approximately 5:45 AM, personnel from the Sadar Police Station intercepted Md. Irfan, a resident of Sunapali, near the Sudunga forest area on Canal Road. Irfan—whose extensive criminal record includes more than 24 cases involving dacoity, robbery, burglary, narcotics offenses, and aluminum wire theft—was traveling alongside two associates on a black Bajaj Pulsar motorcycle bearing registration number OD15 AB 3674.

When police moved to intercept the vehicle, they successfully apprehended the two associates on the spot. Irfan, however, attempted to evade capture. While fleeing the scene, he opened fire on the police team.
Acting in self-defense, the police engaged in controlled retaliatory firing. During the brief exchange, Irfan sustained a gunshot wound to his left leg.
According to police, Irfan fired a total of three rounds, prompting the police team to return fire with two rounds. Following the encounter, authorities secured the area and recovered a pistol, live ammunition, and three empty cartridges from the scene. The motorcycle used by the suspects was also seized as evidence.

The injured suspect was immediately transported to Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) in Burla, where he is currently undergoing medical treatment.
