Bhubaneswar, Aug 11: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has objected to the ongoing construction and beautification works in Odisha's Tampara Lake located in Ganjam district.
As per sources, the Wildlife Society of Odisha had moved the NGT objecting to the construction works around the lake. Since Tampara Lake is a protected Ramsar site, so the NGT reportedly directed the state government not to carry out any construction work within minimum 50-metre radius of the lake, sources informed on Thursday.
Besides, a high-level committee comprising the Central Pollution Control Board, Ganjam Collector and Environment Director has been constituted to investigate the details of the construction work and furnish a report. The NGT would hear the matter on September 13 next, sources revealed.
Worth mentioning that along with Tampara Lake, last year Odisha's Hirakud reservoir and Ansupa Lake were also recognised as wetlands of international importance under the Ramsar convention. Earlier, Chilika Lake too got that rare recognition under Ramsar convention, sources added.
