NCP leader shot in Khulna shortly after Hadi killing.

Violence continues to rock Bangladesh as another high-profile political figure became the target of a gun attack on Monday. Md Motaleb Sikder, a senior leader of the National Citizens Party (NCP), was shot in the head in the Sonadanga area of Khulna. This incident marks the second major shooting of a youth leader this month, further heightening tensions in a country already grappling with widespread protests.

Sikder, aged 42, serves as the central organizer and Khulna divisional convener for Jatiya Sramik Shakti, the labour wing of the NCP. According to Saif Newaz, an organizer for the party’s metropolitan unit, the attack occurred around 12:15 pm inside a house.

Party sources indicate that Sikder was deeply involved in organizing an upcoming divisional labour rally scheduled for later this week. While initial reports suggested his condition was critical, updated information from party officials confirms that the bullet grazed his skull. He is currently reported to be in stable condition, having narrowly escaped a fatal injury.

Context of Rising Unrest

This shooting comes at a volatile time for Bangladesh, occurring just days after the death of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi. Hadi’s killing has already sparked significant outrage and demonstrations across the nation.

Hadi, known for his role in the 2024 student-led uprising and his critical stance on India’s involvement in Bangladesh’s domestic politics, was shot at close range in Dhaka on December 12. Despite being airlifted to Singapore General Hospital for advanced neurosurgical care, he succumbed to his injuries on December 18.

The death of Hadi had already mobilized protesters at major locations like Dhaka’s Shahbagh intersection, where demonstrators have been demanding swift justice. With the fresh attack on Md Motaleb Sikder, concerns regarding law and order in the region are escalating. Authorities have cautioned against further violence and promised firm action against the perpetrators.
