Berhampur, Oct 20: Ganjam Cyber Crime Police have arrested a 39-year-old man from Goa for allegedly cheating a woman of around Rs 60 lakh by promising to marry her through a matrimonial platform.

The accused, identified as Jinu Sahani alias Rakesh Rajput, is a native of Piyanpada village under Phulbani police limits in Kandhamal district. DSP Girija Patnaik and Cyber Crime Police Station IIC Jyotiranjan Behera shared the details at a press conference held at the cyber crime police station in Chhatrapur.

According to police, the accused allegedly cheated several people of around Rs 1.19 crore in total. Five cases have been registered against him at different police stations.

Police said a woman from Bhanjanagar had created a profile on a matrimonial website to find a partner for remarriage. The accused allegedly contacted her by posing as a man named Sai Krupa Das from Bhubaneswar.

After gaining her trust by promising marriage, he allegedly made up various stories to demand money. He reportedly sent fake photographs, conducted video calls and shared forged medical documents through WhatsApp to make his claims appear genuine.

Believing him, the woman allegedly pawned her gold jewellery and borrowed money from family members and others before transferring around Rs 60 lakh to different bank accounts.

During the investigation, police seized seven mobile phones, seven SIM cards, six chargers, fake rubber stamps, a stamp pad, debit cards, Aadhaar and voter identity cards, a railway identity card, a fake court order and a forged SBI demand draft receipt from the accused.

Police also recovered Rs 2,080 in cash and froze approximately Rs 12,31,976 in suspected proceeds linked to the case.

Police said the accused had allegedly been involved in several fraud cases since 2015. He reportedly created fake profiles to target widowed women with promises of marriage and also allegedly cheated people on the pretext of providing jobs.

Cases have been registered against him in areas including Puri-Konark, Berhampur Cyber Crime Police Station and various police stations in Bhubaneswar.

Another accused in the case, Uttam Kumar Sahu alias Miki, 32, had been arrested earlier, police said.
