Keonjhar, Jan 7: A private bus driver was fined ₹10,000 and had his driving license seized after being found driving under the influence of alcohol during a routine checking by the Transport Department in Keonjhar district.

According to official sources, the Transport Department, with assistance from Ghasipura police, was conducting a strict inspection drive targeting passenger buses. Officials were verifying vehicle documents and assessing the physical condition of drivers at the bus stand.

During the inspection, a private bus named “Moti”, operating on the Keonjhar–Bari route, was stopped. On examination, the driver was found to be in an intoxicated condition while driving. He was immediately detained, penalized with a fine of ₹10,000, and his driving license was seized by the Transport Department.

After an alternative driver was arranged, the bus was allowed to resume its journey to ensure passenger convenience.

Meanwhile, the detained driver defended himself, claiming that he does not usually consume alcohol and had only taken a small amount on the day, which led to what he described as a misunderstanding by the police.

Transport officials reiterated that such checks will continue and warned drivers against driving under the influence, citing serious risks to passenger safety.
