Intense cold continues with fog alerts for five interior districts

The winter season has firmly established its presence across the state, with plummeting mercury levels forcing residents in the interior districts to bundle up. According to the latest data released by the Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar on December 15, 2025, severe cold conditions are currently prevailing over the hilly regions and plains of Odisha.

Cold Wave and Temperature Drops

The realized weather data highlights a significant drop in night temperatures. G. Udayagiri emerged as the coldest spot in the state, recording a bone-chilling minimum temperature of 5.0°C at the local AMFU station. In the plains, Phulbani was not far behind, registering a low of 6.0°C, which is a significant departure of -3.1°C from the normal range. Other areas also felt the freeze, with Koraput dropping to 6.8°C (a sharp departure of -6.3°C) and Semiliguda recording 7.4°C.

In contrast, the highest maximum temperature was recorded in Paralakhemundi at 30.6°C. The Twin Cities remained relatively cooler but comfortable; both Bhubaneswar and Cuttack recorded identical minimum temperatures of 12.6°C.

Fog Warning Issued

Visibility has become a concern alongside the dropping temperatures. The IMD has reported that dense fog was realized in Rourkela, while moderate fog was observed in Koraput. Shallow fog was also reported in Bhawanipatna and Jharsuguda.

Looking ahead, the weather department has issued a forecast valid until the morning of December 17, 2025. Shallow to moderate fog is very likely to occur at isolated places over the districts of Sundargarh, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Koraput, and Jharsuguda. Commuters in these regions are advised to exercise caution during early morning hours.

Weekly Outlook

For those hoping for a respite from the cold or a sudden rise in temperature, the forecast suggests stability. The Meteorological Centre has predicted that there will be no large change in the minimum temperature (night temperature) over the districts of Odisha for the next 6 to 7 days. Dry weather is expected to prevail across the rest of the state.

As the cold wave conditions persist, particularly in the tribal and interior belts, residents are gearing up for a shivering week ahead.
