Tezpur, Dec 13: Police in Assam’s Sonitpur district have arrested a retired Indian Air Force personnel on charges of maintaining links with Pakistani intelligence operatives, officials said on Saturday.

Additional Superintendent of Police Haricharan Bhumij said preliminary investigations suggest that the accused had shared sensitive documents and information with operatives based in Pakistan through social media platforms.

A laptop and mobile phone belonging to the accused have been seized for forensic examination.

The arrested individual has been identified as Kulendra Sarma, a resident of the Patia locality in Tezpur. He was taken into custody late Friday night after being kept under sustained surveillance as part of an ongoing investigation.

Officials said a case has been registered against Sarma under Sections 147, 148, 152, 238 and 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Investigators allege that he was in contact with persons linked to a Pakistani espionage agency, triggering serious national security concerns.

Further investigation is underway to determine the nature and extent of Sarma’s alleged involvement, including how long the suspected contacts lasted and whether classified or sensitive information was compromised. Authorities said additional details are likely to emerge as the probe progresses.
