Bhubaneswar, August 12: The Odisha Government observed World Elephant Day with a state-level programme at the RMNH Auditorium in Bhubaneswar, reaffirming its commitment to elephant conservation and human-elephant coexistence.

Forest, Environment and Climate Change Minister Ganesh Ram Singkhuntia, who inaugurated the event, stressed a science-based, technology-driven and community-focused approach to protecting elephants, reducing human-elephant conflict and improving safety measures.

The government also said it is exploring accidental death insurance and other social security benefits for Gaja Sathis and mahouts involved in elephant conservation. Assistance under the Anukampa Scheme was also highlighted for families whose houses were completely damaged by elephants.

MLAs from various constituencies of Angul and Dhenkanal districts discussed local elephant-related challenges and assured continued support for conservation efforts.

A technical presentation highlighted Odisha’s elephant population of 2,103 and measures including habitat restoration, technology-enabled conflict mitigation and community participation.

The programme also featured felicitation of conservation contributors, awareness material releases, cultural performances and screenings on elephant conservation, with participation from forest officials, scientists, researchers, Gaja Sathis, local communities, students and NGOs.
