Bhubaneswar, July 27: Students’ union election in Odisha colleges and universities will have no negative impact on academic activities of students. It could be conducted maintaining peace and harmony on the campuses and the state government is mulling to hold students’ union election from this year.
Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj informed Odisha Assembly on Friday replying a question of MLA Tusharkanti Behera.
Several student organisations are demanding to conduct students’ union elections which were stopped in the state since 2018 on the pretext of maintaining peace and harmony on the campuses.
Last year, ABVP’s state general secretary Arijeet Pattanaik had filed a petition in the Orissa High Court seeking its direction to then BJD government to conduct students’ union elections.
Similarly, NSUI president of Odisha unit Yasir Nawaz said NSUI has been raising the demand for students’ union elections after Covid pandemic.
The Higher Education Minister had earlier informed that discussions are already underway on holding students’ union elections.
