Bhubaneswar, June 16: Reaffirming the state’s strong stance on women’s safety, Odisha Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida on Monday declared that the state government has adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards gender-based violence.

Parida, who also serves as the Minister for Women and Child Development, made the remarks while addressing a state-level workshop on gender-based violence and trauma-informed care for survivors, organised by the Odisha State Commission for Women in Bhubaneswar.

“Gender-based violence undermines the health, dignity, safety, and freedom of its victims,” Parida said.

“A truly empowered society is one where women are empowered and can lead the way forward. Preventing such violence must be a shared responsibility, and awareness is the first step,” she said.

Parida emphasized the importance of skill development and reintegration for survivors of violence, particularly those residing in Sakhi One-Stop Centres, which support women in distress.

“We must focus on helping these women rebuild their confidence and reintegrate into society. Skill training can provide them with sustainable livelihoods and restore their sense of dignity,” she noted.

She also urged police personnel to handle cases of gender-based violence with greater sensitivity, ensuring that survivors are treated with empathy and respect throughout the legal process.

Shubha Sharma, Principal Secretary of the Women and Child Development Department, stressed the need for inter-departmental coordination to effectively combat gender-based violence.

“It’s not just about showing empathy. The objective is to create a safe and supportive environment where survivors can heal and rebuild their lives,” Sharma said.

Inspector General of Police (Crimes Against Women and Children Wing) Shyni S highlighted the importance of societal mindset change, stating that legal measures alone are not enough without broader awareness and cultural transformation.
