Bhubaneswar, August 19: In a significant move to boost enrolment and reduce dropout rates in government schools, the Odisha government has announced a new initiative under which children enrolled in Shishu Batika (pre-primary classes) will receive free uniforms and other essential items.
School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond informed that the scheme will benefit over 3.10 lakh children enrolled in Shishu Batika classes across 45,000 primary schools in the state. Each child will be provided with uniforms, shoes, socks, and track pants—all free of cost.
The state government has allocated ₹1,000 per child to cover the expenses under this initiative. “The Department of School and Mass Education is preparing a comprehensive plan to roll out the scheme effectively,” said Minister Gond.
He expressed confidence that the move will motivate children to attend school regularly and develop a positive habit of learning. “By addressing the basic needs of students, we aim to make schooling more attractive and reduce dropout rates significantly,” he added.
The initiative is part of the government’s broader efforts to strengthen early childhood education and ensure that every child in Odisha has access to quality schooling without financial barriers.
