Bhubaneswar, Sept 4: Dragon fruit grown in the farm house of Odisha Deputy Chief Minister K V Singh Deo’s farm house in Patnagarh of Balangir district was exported to Dubai for the first time.
Deo, who also holds the portfolio of Agriculture & Farmers' Empowerment Department flagged off the export of around four quintals of dragon fruit via Indigo Cargo at the Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) on Wednesday.
The Deputy C M, who proudly identifies as a farmer, said the decision to cultivate dragon fruit was taken during the COVID-19 pandemic and it turned fruitful today.
The dragon fruits are grown completely organically to ensure that their nutrients remain intact, allowing them to stay fresh for longer time compared to those produced with chemical fertilizers, said Deo.
"Dragon fruit is beneficial for health. Consuming it can help prevent problems like cancer, diabetes, and constipation," he said.
He also emphasised that the Odisha government is focusing on horticulture and encouraging farmers to adopt this practice. Singh Deo highlighted that the state government provides various incentives for horticulture, including farm ponds, irrigation systems, and subsidies through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).
Principal Secretary of the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Empowerment (DAFE), Dr. Arabinda Padhee, said the state has planned to export high-quality agricultural products from Odisha to foreign countries in larger scale in the coming days.
