Balangir, Jan 30: The death of a patient sparked high tension at Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital in Odisha’s Balangir district after his family members thrashed the on-duty doctor, who was reportedly in an inebriated condition, alleging medical negligence.
The deceased has been identified as Niku Barik, a resident of Kandhapalipara area in the district.
According to the family members of the deceased, Niku was admitted to the state-run medical facility at around 5 pm last evening. However, he was not attended by any doctor till 8 pm. Thereafter, his family members enquired about the on-duty doctor and came to know that the doctor was not available.
Left out with no other option, the Niku’s family members waited for the doctor till 11 pm. Moments later, the doctor reached the hospital and checked the patient after being requested by his family members and declared him dead.
Meanwhile, the patient’s family members realized that the doctor was drunk and one of them started thrashing him.
Thereafter, the security guards intervened and rescued the doctor.
The deceased’s family alleged that Niku died before the arrival of the doctor.
On learning about the incident, the hospital Superintendent ordered a probe into the matter.
A five-member team will be formed to investigate the matter and necessary actions will be taken on the basis of the report, sources said.
