Gajapati, Aug 8: In a shocking display of negligence in the healthcare system, a 108 ambulance driver, allegedly in inebriated condition, slept inside the vehicle while transporting a pregnant woman to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Odisha’s Berhampur.
As per reports, the incident occurred late last night in Kanikipadar village under R. Udayagiri block of the when Nandini Raita, the pregnant wife of Bijaya Raita, experienced labor pain.
Her family rushed her to Chandragiri hospital for treatment. However, due to complications and the critical condition of the unborn child, doctors referred her to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur for advanced care.
Her family arranged for a 108 ambulance to transport her to Berhampur. But during the journey, the ambulance driver, reportedly heavily intoxicated, began driving recklessly. Midway through the journey, he abruptly stopped the vehicle and fell asleep inside, leaving the patient and her family stranded on the roadside.
Despite repeated attempts by the family to wake him up, the driver did not respond. With no other option and time running out, the family was forced to arrange a private vehicle in the middle of the night to continue their journey to Berhampur.
However, concerned authorities could not be reached for comments on the issue.
