Pipili, Jun 5:Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Friday laid the foundation stone for an Appliqué and Handicrafts Hub at Pipili in Odisha’s Puri district, marking a major push to promote the state’s traditional crafts.
The project, to be developed by the Handlooms, Textiles and Handicrafts Department of the Odisha government, will be built at an estimated cost of ₹80 crore. According to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), the initiative is expected to benefit more than 6,000 local artisans engaged in appliqué work.
The hub will be developed by Odisha Bridge and Construction Corporation Limited and is designed to provide integrated facilities for artisans to produce, display, and sell their creations under one roof.
Officials said artisans will receive training in digital marketing, modern packaging, and improved production techniques. The project will also ensure a steady supply of raw materials to support continuous craftsmanship.
The proposed centre aims to strengthen the global visibility of Pipili’s famous appliqué art while preserving Odisha’s rich cultural heritage.
The five-storey complex will feature modern infrastructure including retail spaces, an amphitheatre, interpretation centre, audio-visual and training facilities, demonstration zones, green rooms, parking areas, as well as conference and banquet halls.
The state government had earlier approved the proposal for establishing the appliqué hub at Pipili, which is widely known for its vibrant and traditional appliqué handicrafts.
