Bhubaneswar, Ap 15: On the occasion of Maha Vishuba Sankranti and the Odia New Year, the Chief Minister of Odisha addressed the “Odia Paksha Udyapani-2026” event at the UYIT Krushi Shiksha Sadan, calling for the promotion of Odia language, literature, and culture not just for 14 days but as an integral part of daily life throughout the year. He urged everyone to make the celebration of the "Odia Paksha" a declaration of our identity and the beginning of a cultural awakening.
The Chief Minister emphasized that economic prosperity cannot exist without a cultural foundation. Reflecting on the historic struggles to protect the Odia language and culture, he stated that these movements have strengthened our national identity. He acknowledged the contributions of eminent literary figures like Gangadhar Meher, Radhanath Ray, Madhusudan Rao, and Fakir Mohan Senapati, whose work has paved the way for a new direction in Odia literature.
He also spoke about the ‘Odia Paksha’ initiative, which started on Utkal Divas, aiming to awaken Odia pride across all levels of society. Through campaigns like ‘Ama Poshak Ama Parichaya,’ traditional handloom fabrics are being promoted, while the ‘Prabesha Utsav’ encourages the inclusion of children in education. The use of Odia names in commercial establishments has also been part of a larger movement to promote the language and culture.
During the event, over 18,000 ‘Barnabodha’ and ‘Shishulekha’ books were distributed, while a record number of blood units were collected in a single day.
A cultural road show in Pipili also showcased Odisha’s rich heritage. The Chief Minister highlighted that the worldwide recognition of the traditional Pakhala dish and the expansion of folk arts have enhanced the pride of Odia culture.
He revealed that the state government has allocated ₹614 crores in the current budget for the promotion of Odia language, literature, and culture. Additionally, plans are underway to establish a ‘Chhau Academy’ for the preservation of Chhau dance and to develop the birthplace of Barputra as a cultural tourism hub.
The Chief Minister also mentioned plans to make the use of Odia mandatory in all government activities and educational institutions, in line with the Vision 2036 and 2047 goals of transforming Odisha into a developed and culturally rich state with the cooperation of all.
At the event, a display organized by the Department of Odia Language, Literature, and Culture was inaugurated, along with the release of various books.
Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida spoke about the department's efforts to reintroduce Odia traditions, culture, and culinary practices to every household in the state. Law, Justice, and Excise Minister Prithviraj Harichandan remarked that the government had taken significant steps to implement the full-fledged "Odia Paksha" for the first time.
Odia Language, Literature, and Culture Minister Suryabanshi Suraj noted that the initiative, which began as a trial last year, has now touched the hearts of every Odia person, turning into a statewide celebration. In the coming days, the campaign will further promote Odisha’s culinary traditions, with celebrity chef Ranveer Brar and chef Abhinash being appointed as ambassadors for the Odia culinary movement. Through their collaboration, the state hopes to preserve and take Odia cuisine to an international level.
The event was also attended by senior officials from the Department of Odia Language, Literature, and Culture, including Secretary and Chief Secretary Rashmita Panda, who gave the welcome address, and Divisional Secretary Dev Prasad Dash, who expressed gratitude for the support extended.
