Bhubaneswar, April 11: Chhena Poda Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm in Odisha’s capital on April 11, as a vibrant cultural rally brought together people to honour the state’s iconic sweet while renewing demands for its long-pending Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
The grand procession, organised by Nayagarh Bikash Manch in association with Odia Media Private Limited, began at Ram Mandir Square and concluded at Lower PMG. The rally saw massive participation, with streets coming alive through traditional music, dance performances, and cultural displays.
Despite being celebrated annually since 2022, Chhena Poda is yet to receive a GI tag, which would formally recognise its origin and safeguard its authenticity. The delay has raised concerns among traders and locals over the possible dilution of its traditional preparation.
Members of Nayagarh Bikash Manch said the movement for GI recognition has gained significant traction over the years, expanding beyond Nayagarh with support from multiple districts and organisations, including OMFED, OTDC, and Odisha Tourism.
They further informed that the GI application process, initiated by the then District Magistrate in 2023, had stalled midway. However, fresh assurances have been received from the district administration to revive the process.
