Odisha capital received rainfall 36 days between June 1 & Aug 29: IMD

Bhubaneswar, Aug 31: The capital city of Odisha, Bhubaneswar received rainfall 36 days in 90 days between June 1 & August 29, according to regional meteorological centre.

Weather expert of Bhubaneswar meteorological centre Umashankar Das has blamed EI Nino impact on monsoon for rain deficit.

El Nino refers to an abnormal warming of surface waters in equatorial Pacific Ocean that suppresses monsoon rainfall.   

Bhubaneswar received 2.5 mm or above rainfall 36 days between June 1 & August 29 - eight days in June, 15 days in 31 days of July and 13 days from August 1 to 29. However, the city received no rain for 38 days during these 90 days.

According to meteorological department parameter rainfall of 2.5 mm or above in a day is considered as rainy day.

During these 90 days, rainfall was recorded below 2.5 mm in 54 days - 18 days in June, 7 days in July and 13 days in August.

On the other hand, met officials have informed that rainfall activities that have remained subdued in Odisha due to a weak monsoon is expected to increase from today.

The Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC) at SOA University here also stated that a cyclonic circulation is likely to form over east central and adjoining north-east Bay of Bengal off the Myanmar-Bangladesh coast on Wednesday and move towards north-west bay on September 2.
