Finance Minister promotes Indian handloom artisans during historic budget presentation

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman made a striking cultural statement on Sunday as she arrived to present the Union Budget 2026. For her record-breaking ninth consecutive budget delivery, she chose a magnificent handwoven Kancheevaram silk saree from Tamil Nadu. This sartorial pick reflects her ongoing commitment to promoting India’s rich textile heritage and supporting local weavers.

The 2026 Nirmala Sitharaman Budget Saree features a deep purple body adorned with light golden-brown checks, known as 'kattam'. The drape is finished with a coffee-brown border and a vibrant mustard-gold pallu, which she elegantly paired with a warm woollen shawl. Choosing a Kancheevaram saree is particularly significant this year, as it pays tribute to her home state of Tamil Nadu during its election year.

Since taking office in 2019, the Finance Minister has transformed her budget day appearance into a showcase for Indian craftsmanship. Her journey through India's handloom map began with a pink Mangalagiri saree. Over the years, she has highlighted various regional styles, including the yellow silk of 2020 and the Pochampally Ikat of 2021.

Notably, in 2022, she honored Odisha by wearing a traditional Bomkai saree, a gesture fondly remembered by the people of the state. Her recent choices include an Ilkal silk from Karnataka in 2023 and an ivory Madhubani hand-painted saree in 2025, gifted by Padma Shri awardee Dulari Devi.

Before heading to Parliament at 11 am, Sitharaman followed her established ritual. She visited Rashtrapati Bhavan carrying the iconic red ‘bahi-khata’ tablet sleeve. By consistently choosing hand-woven fabrics, the Finance Minister uses the national stage to provide a significant boost to the Indian handloom industry and its millions of artisans.
