Bhubaneswar, Sept 29: In a significant move to strengthen primary education in the state, the Odisha Cabinet on Monday approved a proposal worth Rs 12,000 crore to establish Adarsha Vidyalayas (model schools) in every Gram Panchayat under the Godabarisha Mishra Adarsha Prathamika Vidyalaya Yojana.
In the first phase, the state plans to construct 2,200 model schools at an estimated cost of Rs 12,000 crore. Each school is expected to cost around Rs 5 crore, with the final expenditure to be determined based on detailed project reports (DPRs).
After the completion of the first phase, the initiative will be expanded to cover all Gram Panchayats across the state.
According to an official statement, the initiative will prioritise the development of Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) skills, in alignment with the National Initiative for Proficiency in Reading with Understanding and Numeracy (NIPUN) Odisha and the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
The decision, based on recommendations from the School & Mass Education Department, aims to align with the Right to Education Act, 2009, while focusing on delivering quality education at the grassroots level.
