The hospitality leader is recognized for his decades of industry contribution.

Bhubaneswar: In a significant recognition for one of Odisha’s most prominent hospitality leaders, Mr. Souvagya Mohapatra has been conferred with a Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Hospitality and Tourism. The honour was awarded by ICFAI University, Gangtok, marking a major milestone in his celebrated career.

This doctorate is not just an academic achievement; it stands as a testament to decades of dedication, innovation, and leadership. For over 30 years, Mr. Mohapatra has been a pivotal figure in shaping India's modern hospitality landscape.

Today, Mr. Mohapatra serves as the Managing Director for India, Nepal, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka at Atmosphere Core, a dynamic, Singapore-headquartered hospitality group. He is currently spearheading the brand's ambitious expansion across South Asia, aiming to establish a portfolio of 25 properties in India by 2025. Under his guidance, the group has already signed management contracts for 20 new properties in key locations like Bhubaneswar, Kolkata, Jaipur, Goa, and Coorg, among others.

Mr. Mohapatra’s journey began with The Oberoi Group. However, he spent a considerable and transformative part of his career with MAYFAIR Hotels & Resorts. Joining as a Manager Operations, he rose through the ranks to become the Executive Director. During his tenure, he was instrumental in the brand's remarkable growth, helping it expand from just two hotels to 12 world-class luxury properties.

His deep connection to the hospitality industry in Odisha is profound. Mr. Mohapatra is an alumnus of Ravenshaw College, Cuttack, and holds a degree in Hotel Management from IHM Bhubaneswar, as well as an MBA from North Odisha University.

Beyond his corporate roles, he has been a relentless advocate for the Odisha tourism sector's growth. He has held leadership positions in numerous national associations, including being a former Co-Chair of the CII Tourism Subcommittee, Chairman of the FICCI Eastern Region Tourism Committee, and a governing body member for IHM Bhubaneswar and Balangir.

Reflecting on the achievement, Mr. Salil Panigrahi, Co-Founder and Group Managing Director of Atmosphere Group, said the recognition was "richly deserved".

Expressing his gratitude, Mr. Mohapatra said, “I am deeply humbled by this recognition from ICFAI University, Gangtok... This honour motivates me to continue learning, mentoring, and advancing the industry that has given me so much”.
