Bhubaneswar, Jan 11: To check the cattle menace in the city, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has imposed a ban on movement of cattle on roads.
Any cattle found roaming on the city roads will be lifted to animal welfare centres without informing the owners.
The civic body has issued a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) in this regard which will come into force from January 15.
According to the SOP, the BMC administration will lift cattle found roaming on the city roads and legal action will be taken if anybody opposes the act with imposition of penalty.
Owners of milking cows will have to pay double amount of the money spend for their care in animal welfare centres to take return and bear the transport expenses, said the BMC.
It is observed that several road accidents occur due to direct vehicular hitting to cattle or while trying to avert hitting.
