BJD stages protest in front of Raj Bhavan

Bhubaneswar, Sep 21: The opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Saturday gheraoed Raj Bhavan over the alleged assault on an Army officer and his fiancee by police in Bhubaneswar.

The BJD workers took to the street after opposition leader and former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday demanded a judicial inquiry into the Army officer assault incident.

The regional party has demanded exemplary action against the police officials of Bharatpur police station who allegedly assaulted and misbehaved with Indian Army officer of Sikh Regiment Major Gurvansh Singh and his fiancée.

“Crime Branch investigation is nothing but eyewash to cover up the police brutality. We demand court-monitored SIT probe into the matter as said by Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik,” said BJD leader and Bhubaneswar mayor Sulochana Das.

Similarly, BJD leader Lekhasri Samantasinghar said the way an Army Major and a lady were treated in Bharatpur Police Station is shocking and a matter of great concern. The BJD demands a court monitored SIT probe and a judicial inquiry into this grave incident.

During the BJD tenure, CCTV cameras were installed at the Bharatpur police station, but currently, the police claim they were never installed. The police are trying to hush up the incident, said BJD MP Sulata Deo.

The party has also decided to submit a memorandum addressed to the President of India over the rising law and order situation in Odisha.
