Odisha Assembly Monsoon Session begins today; opposition set to raise key issues

The seventh (Monsoon) session of the 17th Odisha Legislative Assembly is set to commence from today, September 22, and will continue until October 3. The brief session will comprise nine working days, with three holidays in between.

Bhubaneswar, Sept 22: The seventh (Monsoon) session of the 17th Odisha Legislative Assembly is set to commence from today, September 22, and will continue until October 3. The brief session will comprise nine working days, with three holidays in between.

Despite its limited duration, the session is expected to witness intense political exchanges, with the Opposition preparing to raise several issues concerning the state government. The Mineral Development and Regulation (MMDR) Amendment Bill and errors in school textbooks are among the key matters likely to dominate the proceedings.

The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has reportedly submitted a notice seeking a discussion through a motion on the MMDR issue. The Opposition is also planning a series of programmes to put pressure on the government inside the Assembly.

Meanwhile, the state government has indicated that it is prepared to respond to issues raised by the Opposition and participate in discussions on matters concerning the state's interests.

An all-party meeting was held at the Assembly premises on Monday under the chairmanship of Speaker Surama Padhy. Deputy Speaker Bhawani Shankar Bhoi, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mukesh Mahaling, Government Chief Whip Saroj Pradhan, Leader of Opposition Deputy Leader Prasanna Acharya, Opposition Chief Whip Pramila Mallik and Congress Legislature Party Deputy Leader Ashok Das were among those who attended the meeting.

During the meeting, the Speaker sought the cooperation of all political parties to ensure the smooth functioning of the Monsoon Session.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mukesh Mahaling said that six bills are expected to be introduced during the session. He also said the government is ready to discuss any issue raised by the Opposition that concerns the interests of Odisha.

With several contentious issues lined up and only nine working days available, the Monsoon Session is expected to see vigorous debates between the Treasury and Opposition benches.
