Sambalpur, Jan 8: The annual migratory bird census is underway in over 500 sq km ranging from Hirakud Dam in Odisha’s Sambalpur district to Chhattisgarh border since 6am on Monday.
It will continue till 5.00 pm today.
The region has been divided into 21 sectors and 32 teams from Sambalpur, Bargarh and Jharsuguda districts of the state have been engaged in the census.
Moreover, the teams comprise 30 Forest Department officers and 78 bird experts.
Worth mentioning, over 3 lakh migratory birds were sighted during the annual bird census at Hirakud reservoir in 2023.It is pertinent to mention here that the result of the 2024 annual bird census in Chilika Lake was announced on January 4. The number of birds that flocked to the lake was pegged at 11, 37,759 belonging to 187 species.
