Mining communities embrace farming thanks to new seed distribution

Odisha Mining Corporation recently stepped in to revive agricultural practices near its Dubna-Sekradihi Iron and Manganese Mines. Communities living around the Barbil mining region in Keonjhar district are now seeing a renewed focus on farming. To help local growers build sustainable agriculture practices, OMC provided high-quality Rabi potato seeds to hundreds of rural families.

Reviving Livelihoods With Potato Farming

Farming activities often take a back seat in heavy industrial zones. However, this initiative aims to reverse that trend by directly supporting 300 farmers across several villages. Families residing in Pidhapokhari, Katupali, Dubna, Handibhanga, Basantpur, and Purunadihi received a total of 130 quintals of premium potato seeds late last year. Local growers are currently nurturing these crops and eagerly expect to begin their seasonal harvesting by March 2026. This large-scale push for Rabi potato cultivation demonstrates how industrial entities can successfully promote community resilience.

Combining Supplies With Expert Guidance

Handing out seeds was only the first step of this comprehensive farmer empowerment program. Local agricultural experts teamed up with the corporation to offer hands-on technical advice. By working closely with an Assistant Agriculture Officer, cultivators learned modern, scientific methods to maximize their seasonal yields. This vital support helps families turn their private land into profitable assets and boosts their long-term income potential. When residents feel confident in their farming skills, they are much more likely to continue working the land for years to come.

Building Infrastructure For Future Growth

Water scarcity used to be a major hurdle for winter crops in Keonjhar district farming. Recognizing this crucial challenge, OMC previously constructed four check dams across these peripheral communities to guarantee reliable irrigation throughout the dry months. Thanks to this stable water supply, rural residents can confidently engage in crop diversification. Beyond just growing potatoes, the region is now successfully experimenting with both sunflower and wheat fields.

Such dedicated efforts highlight a strong, ongoing commitment to responsible operations. By empowering local residents with both essential resources and expert knowledge, Odisha Mining Corporation ensures that rural families enjoy stable, independent, and secure livelihoods that will last for generations.
