Bhubaneswar, Aug 4: On the occasion of Odia Journalism Day, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi has extended his heartfelt greetings and congratulations to journalists across the state.
In a special message, Majhi highlighted the pivotal role of journalists in upholding democratic values as the fourth pillar of democracy.
Majhi emphasized the significant contribution of journalists in preserving the integrity and values of democracy.
Taking to his ‘X’ handle, Majhi wrote, “Many greetings and congratulations to all journalist brothers and sisters on the occasion of Odia Journalism Day. The contribution of journalists in maintaining the values of democracy as the fourth pillar is unique.”
The Chief Minister also reflected on the historical roots of journalism in Odisha, pointing to a landmark moment in its history.
He recalled that on this day in 1866, Karmbir Gaurishankar Ray published 'Utkal Deepika,' Odisha’s first printed newspaper. Majhi praised the publication as a crucial medium that conveyed the joys and sorrows of the region’s people and marked the beginning of journalism in the Odia language.
“Karmbir Gaurishankar Ray published Odisha's first printed newspaper 'Utkal Deepika' on this day in 1866 to convey every happiness and sorrow of Odisha to the people. The journey of journalism in Odia language started with the publication of 'Utkal Deepika',” Majhi added.
Notably, Karmavir Gourishankar Ray initially served as the editor of ‘Utkal Deepika,’ which was first introduced as a weekly magazine before transitioning into a daily newspaper.
‘Utkal Deepika’ was published in Cuttack by Gaurishankar Ray and his close friend Bichitrananda Das, using the facilities of the Cuttack Printing Company.
