Rourkela, May 23: Odia cinema is celebrating 90 years of its rich legacy, tracing its journey from 1936 to 2026. The first Odia film, Sita Bibaha, premiered in 1936, marking the beginning of the state’s film industry. In 1976, Odia cinema saw the release of its first partially color film, Gapa Helebe Sat, showcasing the industry’s evolving storytelling and technical achievements.
The 1970s and 1980s are often described as the golden era of Odia cinema, marked by socially relevant themes, rural narratives, and memorable music that gave the industry a distinct identity nationwide. However, in later years, a lack of originality in storytelling weakened audience engagement.
Infrastructure issues continue to hamper growth. The iconic Kalinga Studio, devastated during the 1999 super cyclone, has been modernised but remains unopened due to delays in its handover to the Odisha Film Development Corporation. Filmmakers face difficulties due to the lack of proper shooting facilities, and concerns have already been raised about the studio’s intended use.
To commemorate the 90th anniversary, the prominent social organization Sahar Seva Samiti of Rourkela city will host a grand celebration tomorrow. The event will feature performances by numerous Odia film artists and a special presentation of classic Odia film songs, paying tribute to the cultural and artistic heritage of Odia cinema.
The celebration not only honors the past but also highlights the enduring impact of Odia films on audiences over the past nine decades, while underscoring the challenges the industry continues to face in sustaining its growth and innovation.
