New Delhi, December 21: Indian Railways has announced a fare revision, set to take effect from December 26, 2025, to address rising operational and manpower costs.

Passengers traveling up to 500 km in non-AC coaches will face an additional charge of Rs 10, while Mail and Express train fares in non-AC coaches will rise by 2 paise per km. However, suburban train services and Monthly Season Tickets (MSTs) are exempt from the hike.

Fares for journeys up to 215 km in ordinary class will remain unchanged.

The fare adjustments are expected to generate Rs 600 crore in additional revenue, helping offset the rising operational costs, including Rs 1.15 lakh crore in manpower expenses and Rs 60,000 crore in pension costs.

Despite the increase, Indian Railways is focusing on enhanced cargo operations and safety improvements to manage expenses.
